On Monday, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Davis Chirchir, unveiled updated road design manuals and specifications. These incorporate international best practices while addressing climate change, road safety, non-motorised transport, and technological advancements.

The new manuals replace the first-generation versions that had been in use for over 35 years.
“The updated manuals support Kenya’s Vision 2030 infrastructure goals, which include the expansion of roads, railways, ports, and telecommunications,” Chirchir said on his official X page.
He added that the manuals also align with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), aimed at driving economic recovery through job creation, cost reduction, and infrastructure development.
“Engineers, planners, contractors, and educators are encouraged to actively use and integrate these manuals into their designs, training, and enforcement,” he stated.
