An 80-year-old man has been rescued in Nyalenda B in Kisumu after his house was marooned by floods following the ongoing heavy rains.
Wilson Sangala had been stranded in the Nanga area in Kisumu Central subcounty after he fell ill and could not walk to safer grounds.
He was rescued by Compassionate Centre for Families (CCF) officers led by Executive Director Sheila Akinyi in collaboration with the Kisumu County Fire Department team following a distress call from his wife.
Sangala was rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for treatment. The wife is being hosted at the CCF facility located at Nanga.
Just like Sangala's house, his neighbours have been marooned by waters caused by backflow from Lake Victoria.
Sheila Akinyi, CCF Executive Director, said they received a distress call from the wife that the husband was stranded after he fell sick.
"We managed to successfully rescue the old man and took him to hospital. We are accommodating the wife at the centre," she said.
Currently, Akinyi said they are hosting more than 100 people who have been displaced from their homes.
The majority of the victims are women and children who are in dire need of food and non-food items.
The most affected areas include Kapuodhe, Nanga, Kiboko Bay and Block where CCF teams have been rescuing stranded families to the centre.
The houses of the victims have been marooned following the ongoing heavy rains which have caused backflow waters from Lake Victoria.
"We are appealing for food, beddings such as mattresses, treated mosquito nets, blankets and bedsheets for the flood victims," Akinyi said.
Those displaced also require urgent medication.
