[PHOTOS] Kenyatta University VC Wainaina visits survivors of tragic accident in hospital

Ten students died at the scene of the accident on Monday, while another one passed away in the hospital.

Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Paul Wainaina on Tuesday morning visited survivors of the gruesome accident that took away 11 students.

He was accompanied by other school officials to Moi County Referral Hospital ward in Voi where the 42 students were admitted.

He engaged in conversations with doctors as he was shown the injuries the student sustained from the accident.

Wanaina also had a chat with some of the survivors.

Voi Sub-county Police Commander Ibrahim Daffala on Monday said that 10 students died on the spot while another one breathed his last in hospital.

42 students sustained serious injuries while four had slight wounds.

"The accident occurred at a time when it was raining heavily. The lorry tried to move away from the road to avoid a head-on collision leading to the accident," Daffala stated.

Pictures seen by the Star show the school bus was hit on the left side.

The accident is said to have occurred in Maungu, Voi, in Taita Taveta county, along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

The school bus was carrying public health students who were heading to Mombasa for an academic trip.

The trailer was heading to Nairobi at the time the accident occurred.

The school bus was carrying 58 passengers.

About four students escaped unhurt. They were taken to Maungu Police Station awaiting further processes.
