•Expansion of irrigation schemes will increase food production, make our agriculture sustainable and break the cycle of poverty inherent in farming.
•The irrigation project will also create more than 30,000 employment opportunities.
At least 5,000 farmers will benefit as President William Ruto on Saturday commissioned the Kiirua Buuri irrigation development project
Speaking in Meru, he said the renewed focus on the establishment, improvement and expansion of irrigation schemes will increase food production, make our agriculture sustainable and break the cycle of poverty inherent in farming.
"This shift from rain-fed agriculture will also enhance farmers’ earnings apart from making our country food sufficient," Ruto said
The irrigation project will also create more than 30,000 employment opportunities.
Also, not only will it improve food and nutrition security but also improve farm income to Sh400 million per year.
