Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Saturday joined Red Cross in distributing relief food to starving Kajiado residents.

The county is among those worst hit by the ongoing drought in the country.

This is after President William Ruto on Friday deployed the Cabinet including his deputy Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to oversee the distribution of relief food in various parts of the country on Saturday.

The move comes as the government scales up mitigation measures to save at least 4.5 million Kenyans affected by the ravaging drought.

The situation has pushed to limits the lives of Kenyans in at least 23 counties across the country.

Eleven counties under Asal are in the drought alarm phase.

These are Turkana, Marsabit, Samburu, Isiolo, Laikipia, Garissa, Tana River, Mandera, Wajir, Kitui and Kajiado.
