Mourners hold their final prayers to Mzee Njenga Mwenda who died last week before the burial at Lang'ata Cemetery on Wednesday, February 17.

Mzee Njenga Mwenda Kariuki, the man after whom Mukuru kwa Njenga slum in Nairobi was named, was laid to rest on Wednesday at the Lang’ata Cemetery.

Njenga died on February 8 at the age of 89 in his car on the way to the hospital.

He had suffered chest complications for more than 10 years.

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko eulogized Mjenga through a phone call put on speaker during tributes made at the burial.

From his hospital bed, Sonko said, “I wish to condole with Njenga’s family as they lay Mzee to rest,” Sonko said.

“I also request your prayers. Nairobi residents, please pray for me”.

Njenga gave his blessings to those he believed in, and to those he doubted, he did not mince words but advised caution.

“I barely know anything from my father’s past, my elder sister can tell you more," Muthoni Njenga, one of Mzee’s three daughters, said.
