NINE senior managers at the University of Eldoret have been suspended to allow for investigations into what has led to frequent strikes by students.
They include deputy vice chancellor Prof Ezekiel Kiprop, Hosea Sitienei (finance officer), Edward Cherogony (security officer), Jacob Bitok (department of mathematics) and Geoffrey Kiptoo (lecturer school of environment). Others are Dr Joseph Koech (registrar administration), John Koros (sports officer), Eliud Saurey (central services) and Mary Chepkite (registrar planning).
The university council chaired by Prof Sarone ole Sena met on Friday and made the decision to suspend the managers. He signed the letters of suspension for most of the managers. Sarone could not be reached for comment on the phone yesterday.
Some of the suspended managers contacted declined to talk on the issue. This year, the university has been rocked by a series of strikes by students and protests. On July 8, the university was shut down after students protested against a fee increase.
The university council has already published in the media details about all employees and ethnic balancing at the university. The Education Committees in the National Assembly and Senate have been investigating the problems at the university and are yet to release their findings.
Last week, the Parliamentary Committee on Education vice chairman Julius Melly, who is also Tinderet MP, called for the removal of the entire management of the university.
