In courts today

A Magistrates court is set to deliver its bail ruling in a case in which a 19-year-old student is alleged to have assaulted a police officer along Kamiti Road.

Ian Njoroge was arraigned in court on June 4 and charged with violently robbing the officer of a communication gadget.

He appeared before Milimani Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi and denied the charges.

The prosecution has opposed his release on bail saying the investigating officer has not finished recording statements from officers who are witnesses.

The DPP requested for three days to finish taking statements and file a formal application to deny him bail.

However, defence lawyers led by Duncan Okatch and Soyinka Lempaa said there are no compelling reasons to deny the accused bond.

Just because the officers have not recorded statements does not warrant his detention," lawyer Okatch said.

"He is a student at a university and has a fixed abode. He has parents and was arrested at a home."

He urged the court to release Njoroge on lenient bail.

Separately, Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe is expected to plead to murder charges today at the Machakos High Court.

He was arraigned in court earlier this week but did not plead to the charge after the state applied he first undergoes a mental assessment.

It is alleged that the MP murdered one David Nduati on May 17 in the Kimuchu area in Makogeni Thika.
