The Kenya Red Cross Society has withdrawn emergency ambulance services in Kakamega county over non-payments.
Medics manning outpost health facilities said the services have been on and off, but have finally been withdrawn.
The services were withdrawn by the society in 2023 for accrued payments, forcing Governor Fernandes Barasa to renegotiate a fresh and enhanced deal in August last year that saw the fleet increased from nine to 12.
The deal will cost the taxpayer Sh100 million in five years. During the falling-off of the new d fleet, Barasa assured Kakamega residents they would benefit from uninterrupted and quality services following the agreement.
“My priority is to ensure there’s full access to health services. In this new five-year contract with the Kenya Red Cross Society, we will have new ambulances replacing the old ones. The new ambulances will be working 24 hours seven days a week without interruption,” Barasa said.
