Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has called for reforms in the Democratic Action Party of Kenya.
Natembeya said that people in the party have different opinions on whether to let others join to expand it or let it remain as it is.
According to him, DAP-K is a liberal party and has potential in the political arena.
“The small murmurs you are hearing are from DAP-K are about those who are conservative and those who want to be liberal and want to rebrand the party so that it is not only for the Western Kenya, so that we have other voices. Politics is not about Western Kenya,” Natembeya said on Tuesday.
“That is the challenge that we have. Others are against opening the doors for other Kenyans to expand DAP-K, because we know it has potential.”
He, however, dismissed reports that there are two teams in the party, saying it neither belongs to him nor the party leader but to the people.
“We have party structures, and the party can resolve to use the structures. We are going to have those issues resolved, and the party is going to remain one,” he added.
His sentiments have been received with mixed reactions from section Western Kenya leaders.
While responding to Natembeya, Mumias East MP Peter Salasya called on Natembeya to reform his party rather than speaking on behalf of DAP-K.
“George Natembeya, kindly update your party and leave Eugine Wamalwa’s party. You should focus on building your party, the Tawe Movement, and leave DAP-K alone,” Salasya said.
“You have never consulted your party on matters to grow the party, but you want to take it by force; stay warned."
The Democratic Action Party of DAP-K is led by Eugine Wamalwa.
The party was one of 23 that contested the 2022 Kenyan general election as part of the Azimio La Umoja alliance.
They had 61 candidates, but only 5 were elected to the 13th Parliament.
