Western is ready to welcome President Uhuru Kenyatta for a visit of the region, Defence CS Eugene Wamalwa has said.

The President will start his visit at Nzoia Sugar Company in Kanduyi, Bungoma, on Tuesday, where he is expected to meet sugar cane farmers.

During his visit to the region, the head of state will award charters to two universities-Kaimosi in Vihiga and Alupe in Busia.

“Tomorrow is a great day for the Western region as we expect two university charters in Busia and Vihiga. I call upon Bungoma residents to turn up in large numbers and welcome our head of state,” Eugene said at Nzoia Sugar Company on Monday.

The CS thanked Uhuru for accepting to be the chancellor of Kibabii University.

Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati said Nzoia Sugar is one of the economic drivers in the region and he expects the President will address the challenges facing the company, including debts.

He also condemned Saturday's attack on Bungoma UDP governor candidate Zachariah Barasa.

“The criminal act that happened in Tongaren paints a bad picture and we should not go that route.  The perpetrators should be brought to book,” Wangamati said.

DAP-K leader Wafula Wamunyinyi urged the Western region to vote for Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

Bungoma county commissioner Samuel Kimiti urged residents to maintain peace ahead of Uhuru’s visit.
