Luhyas have been encouraged to leave Cord and Jubilee to form their own party ahead of 2017 so they can have an impact on national politics. Some community members are in Cord affiliate parties, Jubilee and Amani National Congress coalition.

Former Kakamega county council chairman and member of the Luhya Elders’ Council Lawrence Itolondo says the communities in Western region must consolidate their support to have bargaining power.

“This way we, as a community, can negotiate with whoever is elected President,” he said in an interview. Itolondo said successive governments have been reluctant to initiate development projects in the region, and collapsed industries have not been revived because of lack of unity among Luhya leaders.
