Baringo county has drilled more than 560 boreholes to improve access to clean water for residents
More than half of the population in the semi-arid county now has access to clean water, with an increasing number of households, particularly in remote areas, obtaining their water from boreholes.
The county has so far drilled 100 boreholes using its resources across the county while another 465 were constructed by development partners.
County head of the water, sanitation and irrigation Winnie Bore said her department is focusing on improving communities access to water.
“We are concentrating on those areas where access to water is less than 50 per cent, particularly in Tiaty East, Tiaty West and parts of Baringo North,” she said.
Bore said they were grateful to partners who have helped improve access to clean water.
Hope Water Africa, JICA, the World Food Programme and World Vision are among the partners supporting the strategy through the drilling and maintenance of boreholes.
“As a county we are here to ensure that our development partners are fully supported to deliver on projects like those for water which are aimed at benefiting residents of Baringo,” Bore said.
During a development tour of Marigat ward, Governor Benjamin Cheboi launched a series of projects aimed at bolstering food security, improving infrastructure, access to water and empowering residents.
The governor visited the Ngenyin Irrigation Scheme in Ewalel Soi, which has recently faced significant production hurdles due to a damaged water intake.
The 741-acre scheme has positively impacted on lives in the region. The governor conducted a site inspection and directed the departments of irrigation to urgently commence repair works to ensure local farmers can soon return to full productivity.
Chaboi commissioned the Emmarich Community Borehole for use by households in the area.
He said the project marked a major milestone for a community that has historically endured severe water scarcity and long treks to find water.
“By providing safe water within a 500-meter radius, the initiative will drastically improve local livelihoods and health standards,” the governor said.
He said the county would invest more resources in the water sector and ensure the money is properly utilised to help residents.
