Hundreds of women in the Moiben subcounty in Uasin Gishu staged demonstrations on Thursday to protest against increased alcoholism which they claim has led to the death of nine youths in the last month.

The women staged the demos at the Garage Market which has a population of less than 1,000 people but has more than 25 licenced and illegal bars.

The women complained that their sons and husbands had abandoned homes and camped at drinking joints wasting away their lives.

The protetesting women were led by Beatrice Korir, Alice Ruto and Selina Martin.

The women carried placards and twigs pleading with the county government to shut down all bars in the area to stop the disintegration of families in the area due to alcoholism.

Selina said because men had abandoned their homes there were no new pregnancies in the recent past and some of the ECD units had been shut down due to lack of children.

"Some of our sons and men are now addicted drunkards and cannot even urinate on themselves freely", said Selina.

"Some men are now claiming that women are using family planning methods but that is but that is not true. The truth is most men do not even return to sleep in their homes," said Selina.

She said most youths had also turned into thieves and sold family items to enable them to buy alcohol.

The women engaged in a brief confrontation with some drunkards but police were called on to intervene and stop the eruption of violence.

She said the local community had endorsed a petition to the county government to shut down bars and illegal drinking joints in the region.

"Since we now have names and minutes from residents I will forward the same so that action is taken immediately", said Diffu.

Acting OCPD for the area Kariuki Ndegwa said they would work with all relevant agencies to fight alcoholism in the area.
