The Nakuru family that lost six members in a road crash at Mlima Kiu in the Salama area along Mombasa Road has suffered another blow as the death toll rose to seven.

This was after another family member, an eight-year-old child died while undergoing treatment at Karen Hospital in Nairobi.

Family spokesman, Harisson Mwaniki said the child had been admitted to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) since Monday, April 1 when the accident occurred.

“We got a call from the hospital informing that the boy’s condition was worsening, someone rushed to the hospital and was confronted with the news of his death, so we are currently talking about seven deaths in one family” he said.

Speaking at PCEA Lanet on the sidelines of a memorial service of the deceased family members, Mwaniki three other family members are still admitted to different hospitals in Nakuru and Eldoret.

“We are pushing the burial ceremony to a further day, around April 16 to allow time for those who are still admitted to recuperate and attend the send-off,” he said.

“The family has a heavy burden which is growing every waking because of the mortuary and hospital bills. Those in hospitals are still undergoing different tests and operations."

Mwaniki said the family had approximated that the entire operation of multiple burials and hospital bills would be Sh4 million and was quick to add that the same might shoot due to the latest death.

While appealing to well-wishers to help the family, he said two other family members who were in the same accident have since been treated and discharged.

A family friend who had accompanied the group for the Easter holiday visit to Mombasa also perished in the accident.

“In everything, we thank God, the initial report to the family on the fateful day, we were told only one person in the vehicle from our family members survived and we are grateful that we have five survivors,” he said.

The accident occurred when the vehicle ferrying the family members was involved in an accident with four other vehicles, a Public Service Vehicle, a salon car and two trucks.

Police say the matatu that the family members were travelling in collided head-on with one of the trucks.

Among those who attended the memorial service were Cabinet Secretary Water Sanitation and Irrigation, Zack Njeru and Nakuru County Deputy Governor, David Kones among other leaders.
