Supporters of the DAP-K Cherangany MP candidate Patrick Simiyu Barasa on Wednesday evening halted vote tallying, demanding that their candidate be announced winner.

The crowd of the Azimio One Kenya Coalition stormed a room after receiving a tip-off that a senior police officer was allegedly marking papers in favour of former MP Wesley Kipchumba Korir.

"We cannot allow such illegality to take place.  The returning officer is squarely responsible for this mess," Francis Wangila, one of the protestors, said.

The protestors then started kicking Maurice Kiptui, a deputy OCS attached to Kachibora police station.

Some election material was recovered from an elderly woman who claimed to be an agent of the Ford Kenya party.

Kiptui was, however, saved by heavily armed officers who whisked him into a speeding police landcruiser as the protestors baying for his blood gave chase.

"Wewe OCS unaibia mtu kura? Umekiuka sheria na ni lazima uwajibikie makosa yako (loosely translated to, OCS why are you marking papers in favour of a particular candidate? You must answer for this)," Daniel Wafula, another protestor, said.

The pandemonium halted voting for close to 45 minutes before order was restored by the County Security Committee, led by Trans Nzoia county commissioner Samson Ojwang.

DAP-K Senate candidate Joshua Werunga protested, saying it was painful for someone to steal the election.

"I have suffered from such actions of theft of votes. Some of us have invested heavily in campaigns," he said.

Trans Nzoia police commander Jecinta Wesonga and the county CID boss Kihara said he would prefer charges against anyone found breaking the law.

Former MP Korir, however, said he had no information on those alleged to have surrounded the tallying centre. prompting the police boss warning to have him arrested.

The provisional results streaming in from polling stations in the constituency have indicated that Simiyu is leading.

In a video seen by the Star, several people are seen outside a tallying station exchanging angry words with the security personnel.

They were demanding that the IEBC returning officer announce Simiyu as the MP-elect.

Earlier, Simiyu's rival and incumbent MP Joshua Kutuny conceded defeat and congratulated the DAP-K candidate for winning the seat.

Other candidates who are were vying alongside Kutuny are yet to concede defeat.
