Turkana East gets police station to improve security

Cattle rustling and banditry are scourges in the region and many people have been killed

A police station has been built in Turkana East to fight cattle rustling and banditry that has claimed many lives.

It replaces a dilapidated structure used for decades.

The NG-CDF has facilitated the construction.

Speaking during the opening of the new station in Lokori, Turkana East, MP Ali Lokiru said there was a great need to help build modern offices to police can work in a conducive environment.

“The government through the fund has built several other police stations across the subcounty. They are also a morale booster to soldiers because they are deserve it. They are human beings giving services to the people."

MP Lokiru hinted that peace is slowly returning in Kapedo following a series of meetings by elders from Baringo, Turkana and West Pokot.

Herders from the three counties can be seen sharing water without fear, he said.

The commissioner of police from the office of Inspector General Daniel Mumeu thanked the MP and the government through NG-CDF fund for putting security of the people first.

He said the government is doing its best to fight security in volatile regions by providing vehicles, armour and other equipment. The station will also be fenced to protect the station from attack..

The police subcounty commander in Turkana East Edwin Ogwari said the office is spacious and will serve the entire security formation in Turkana East.

Turkana East has been in the spotlight for a long period in time due to serious insecurity in Kapedo, Lomelo, Kamuge and Napeitom.

The attacks also included angry residents threatening to overrun the old station due to deaths of their loved ones because of cattle rustling and attacks.

For many years the violence in Turkana East has claimed the lives of soldiers, police and civilians.The latest deadly bandit attacks in February this year claimed the lives of a deputy inspectgor general of the GSU and other law enforcers.

the attack occurred at  Ameyen, seven kilometres from Kapedo along the Chemolingot Road.
