Kenyans fined for being in Tanzania illegally

Group of 26 to raise Sh23,000 or spend a year in jail.

A Tanzanian court on Wednesday sentenced 26 Kenyans to one year in jail after they were found to be in the country illegally.

The Rombo District Court in Kilimanjaro Region gave the alternative of those charged paying  Tsh500,000 (Sh23,641).

Resident magistrate Baraka Kibululu convicted them for entering Tanzania without permits and passports.

Earlier in the day, Paschal Mayunga, Assistant Inspector of Immigration in the district, alleged that on March 9, 2021, they received a report of the appearance of non-Tanzanians in the Usseri and arrested them and handed them over to the police.

Mayunga said after being brought to court they confessed to committing the offence.

It was not clear whether the 26 raised the fine or were taken to jail.
