The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leadership in Homa Bay has donated 100 plastic chairs to widows in Kibiri Ward, Karachuonyo Constituency.

The party's organising secretary in Homa Bay, Kennedy Ongati, donated the chairs to the Nyangoreta Widows Group to enhance their business activities.

The widows will generate income for the group by hiring out the chairs for use during functions.

Ongati said the donation is one of the ways of empowering the women to sustain their businesses.

He said the widows, through their leadership, had approached him and requested support with chairs to enhance business sustainability.

“The women will generate income for the group when the chairs are hired out. It is the best way of empowering them, as they can borrow money for their personal businesses,” Ongati said.

Speaking during the handover at Denga village in Kibiri Ward, Ongati said supporting widows and other vulnerable groups is part of the UDA agenda.

President William Ruto campaigned on the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda during his 2022 presidential bid.

It is reported that the agenda resonated with many Kenyans, who voted for him.

The party official argued that they have a responsibility to implement the agenda at the grassroots level.

The Nyangoreta Widows Group, which has more than 120 members, draws its membership from Rabuor, Omindi and Denga polling centres.

Ongati also took the opportunity to campaign for President Ruto's re-election.

“The economic empowerment we have undertaken today is courtesy of party leader President William Ruto. Let us vote for him for a second term to enable him to complete his development agenda,” he said.

The widows' group chairperson, Dorcas Atieno Ombija, said the donation would boost their businesses.

They appreciated the support and urged leaders in the area to continue assisting them.

“We have people with disabilities in the group who need special assistance. We appeal for more help from other well-wishers,” Ombija said.

Another member, Claris Owino, urged the Homa Bay County Government to construct a dam to improve access to water.

She said many residents face difficulties accessing clean water.

“We have people who have developed diarrhoea and contracted cholera because they consume unsafe water. Let the Homa Bay County Government construct a dam here to help us,” Owino said.
