Grief engulfed Mbita subcounty after a senior police officer died on Sunday night in a road accident.

Confirming the incident, area deputy county commissioner Peter Mutiso said the deceased, identified as Chief Inspector Maurice Kyalo, was involved in an accident near Nyakayiemba Primary School along Homa Bay–Mbita road.

Mutiso said the deceased lost control of his vehicle before hitting a culvert.

He said Kyalo, who was the officer commanding Mbita police station, had been on leave and was returning to duty.

“There must have been a problem on the road that made the car veer off,” he said.

Following the incident, security officers from Ogongo police station rushed to the scene and took their colleague to Ogongo Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Mutiso led a group of officers to the scene as investigations commenced.

“We were joined by a team from the county level. Officers were assigned to investigate how the accident occurred,” the administrator said.

The body was taken to Med25 mortuary in Kirindo.

Mutiso described Kyalo as a dedicated public servant who would always respond whenever he was needed.

“He was a steadfast and virtuous personality who served citizens well,” Mutiso said.
