Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang Nyong’o has lauded President William Ruto for what he termed a historic and deeply symbolic decision to rename the soon-to-be-completed Talanta International Stadium to Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium.
In a statement issued on behalf of the residents of Kisumu County and the wider Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB), Nyong’o expressed profound gratitude to the President, describing the move as a monumental act that immortalises one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.
“This decision is a historical act and a deeply fitting tribute to a leader whose life was dedicated to the fight for democracy, justice and the soul of Kenya,” Nyong’o said.
He noted that Raila's role in the country’s Second Liberation, the struggle that culminated in the promulgation of the 2010 Constitution, and his lifelong advocacy for devolution form the foundation of modern Kenya.
According to Nyong’o, naming a major national asset, a 60,000-seater international stadium, after Raila Odinga ensures that his story, sacrifice and values are permanently woven into the national consciousness.
“It guarantees that every future generation of Kenyans will encounter and reflect on the ideals that Baba stood for,” he said.
The Kisumu governor, who doubles up as LREB chairperson, described a stadium as more than just a sporting facility, saying it is a space of aspiration, unity and national pride.
By attaching Raila Odinga’s name to the iconic structure, Nyong’o argued, the country is affirming that the struggle for human rights, political tolerance and inclusive governance remains central to Kenya’s identity.
“The Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium will stand not only as a sporting venue but also as a perpetual monument to a Prime Minister who consistently put country before self,” he said.
He added that the facility will inspire athletes, artists and young people, reminding them that greatness is achieved through tenacity, courage and unwavering belief in the people.
Nyong’o further praised President Ruto’s decision as a demonstration of extraordinary leadership and statesmanship, saying it reflects a commitment to ensuring that national heroes are accorded their rightful place in history, beyond partisan considerations.
“This decision will be remembered long after the noise of politics has faded,” he said, adding that leaders across the Lake Region are looking forward to attending the official opening of the Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium as a celebration of national unity.
He urged all Kenyans to embrace the renaming in the spirit of togetherness and cohesion, describing it as a unifying national gesture that honours the past while inspiring the future.
ODM National Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has also praised Ruto for responding positively to calls to rename the stadium.
Wanga described the renaming as a fitting tribute to the late ODM Party Leader, whose contributions to politics and sports in Kenya have left an indelible mark.
Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, Ruto said the stadium would be named after Raila once it is completed early next year.
