Residents of Nyakach Sub-County in Kisumu County are set to benefit from a wide range of free health and government services as a two-day medical and Huduma outreach begins at Kanyateng’ Primary School.
The outreach, scheduled for today and Sunday, is organised by the Ministry of Health in partnership with the Office of the Attorney General, Huduma Centre, and the Voice of Hope Foundation. Organisers expect more than 10,000 residents from Nyakach and surrounding areas to attend.
On Friday morning, the school compound was busy as health workers and volunteers completed preparations, including setting up tents and arranging equipment. According to Hariet Kedogo, one of the lead organisers, the camp brings together over 150 medical professionals from various specialties.
Residents will have access to free services including triage, blood pressure and BMI checks, and laboratory screening for conditions such as diabetes, hepatitis, and syphilis.
The outreach will also provide HIV and TB testing, physiotherapy, general physician consultations, dental care, cervical cancer screening, eye care services, and mother-and-child immunisation.
Kedogo highlighted that sickle cell screening has been prioritised this year due to an observed increase in cases in the area. Individuals diagnosed will be linked to ongoing care during and after the outreach.
Beyond healthcare, the event offers residents access to essential government services. The Voice of Hope Foundation has been mobilising the community to help residents obtain documents and services that are often inaccessible due to distance, limited information, or online barriers.
Chrispine Osunga of the foundation said the team visited villages to raise awareness on voter registration, marriage registration, birth and death certificates, and the e-Citizen platform. The exercise revealed that many residents remain unregistered or unaware of the procedures for accessing government services.
The Office of the Attorney General confirmed that over 190 marriages have already been registered during the outreach, with several couples set to participate in a mass wedding on Saturday to receive their marriage certificates. Osunga noted that the response highlights a demand among couples seeking to formalise their unions.
Other services available at the outreach include processing certificates of good conduct, registration of births and national identity cards, as well as legal advice and consultations. The Attorney General and Principal Secretary Oluga are expected to officially commission the event on Saturday morning.
Youth empowerment is another key focus of the outreach. The Ministry of Youth Affairs is registering young people into the Nyota programme, which promotes youth engagement and economic empowerment. A digital hub, the first of its kind in Nyakach, will also be launched, offering training in digital skills, online entrepreneurship, and creative industries. Osunga said the hub aims to provide rural youth with opportunities often available only in urban areas.
Environmental conservation has also been included, with 2,000 tree seedlings set aside for planting within the school compound and distribution to neighbouring schools to encourage environmental stewardship.
Samuel Mola, CDF Project Coordinator and chair of the organising committee, said the initiative was spearheaded by Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor to address service gaps in the area. Mobilisation efforts, including buses across all wards, aim to ensure that elderly residents, widows, and other vulnerable groups can attend.
Mola added that widows and adolescents will have dedicated sessions with government officials to learn about social protection and empowerment programmes. Child protection officers will also engage parents on issues including child abuse reporting, positive parenting, and mentorship for orphans and vulnerable children.
Organisers said they are prepared to host the large crowds expected during the two-day event, including visitors from neighbouring counties. The outreach represents a concerted effort by the government and its partners to bring essential services directly to residents and ensure inclusivity.
