The political tide in Kisumu appears to be shifting as the Kano community has thrown its weight behind Kisumu Central MP Dr. Joshua Oron ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial race.

Representatives from 13 clans of the Kano community convened a meeting in Nyando on Thursday, where they unanimously affirmed their support for Dr. Oron, lauding his long-standing commitment to community development and service delivery.

The elders said their decision was informed by Oron’s proven track record in promoting education, health, and access to clean water, achievements they said began long before he joined active politics. Elder Walter Aluoch, who spoke on behalf of the council, said the community had made a collective decision to back Oron for the top county seat.

“As the Kano community, we have made up our minds to support Dr. Joshua Oron,” Aluoch said.

He added, “He has demonstrated what true leadership means, serving people selflessly without expecting anything in return. Even before he became an MP, he was already transforming lives through health initiatives and education support.”

Aluoch noted that while some members of the community were also expressing interest in the gubernatorial race, the elders had settled on Oron as their preferred candidate.

“We have other sons like Jack Ranguma and Ken Obura who are capable leaders, but our decision is based on development track record and consistency. Oron has stood with the people, and the people are now standing with him,” Aluoch added.

The elders also emphasised their commitment to the ODM party, which remains dominant in Kisumu politics. They said they would rally behind Oron to ensure he secures the ODM ticket during the party primaries.

Keziah Opondo, one of the women leaders who attended the meeting, praised Oron for his people-centred leadership, describing him as a humble servant of the people.

“Dr. Oron has been there for us long before he joined Parliament. He helped schools with bursaries, supported hospitals with medical equipment, and improved access to clean water for many families. That is the kind of leader we want, one who puts people first.”

“He is not just a leader for Kisumu Central; he is a leader for the entire county. That is why the Kano community and many others see him as the right person to take Kisumu to the next level,” she added.

Elder James Ochue said the community plans to reach out to all Kano sons interested in the race to inform them of the elders’ collective position.

“We will meet all our sons who want to contest and tell them that the community is behind Oron. If they choose to go on, that is their democratic right, but our decision stands,” Ochue said.

The elders called for unity and harmony within the community, saying divisions could cost them political strength.

“If we move as one, our numbers and unity will deliver the seat. We are not just endorsing Oron; we are endorsing a development agenda that benefits every corner of Kisumu,” Ochue noted.

Others who are set to vie for the seat include Kisumu senator Tom Ojienda, Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathews Owili, Ken Obura and Aduma Owuor. Kisumu women representative Ruth Odinga has also expressed interest in the seat.
