Nyong'o mourns ex-Minister Dalmas Otieno as as a sharp-minded leader

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has joined other leaders in sending a heartfelt message of condolence following the death of former Cabinet Minister and Rongo MP Dalmas Otieno.

In his tribute, Nyong’o described Otieno as a sharp-minded leader whose “transformative economic ideas for the wananchi and political foresight” will be remembered for years to come.

“I have learnt with deep sorrow the passing on of Dalmas Otieno Anyango, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, relatives, and friends during this difficult time,” Nyong’o said.

The governor recalled working closely with Otieno on various platforms, praising his wisdom and dedication to public service.

Otieno, who served as Rongo MP for several terms, also held different Cabinet positions during his political career.

Nyong’o noted that his “selfless service to the people of Rongo and to the nation of Kenya” left a lasting legacy.

“Even as we mourn, let us celebrate his remarkable life of service and pray that the Almighty God grants his soul eternal rest. May his family and loved ones find comfort and strength in God’s grace,” he added.Otieno passed away earlier on Sunday in a Nairobi hospital where he had been undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness. He was 80 years old.

Otieno, a towering figure in Kenya’s political landscape for over three decades, served as Rongo MP and held various ministerial positions under the Daniel arap Moi and Mwai Kibaki administrations.

He is perhaps best remembered for his role as Minister for Public Service in the Grand Coalition Government, where he spearheaded transformative reforms in Kenya’s civil service. 

Born in 1945 in Rongo, Migori County, Otieno had a long and distinguished career in politics and public administration.

He served as Minister for Industrialisation, Labour, and Transport & Communications during his early political life, and later played a central role in digitising government services and modernizing civil service operations.
