Water vendors in Homa Bay have decried the increased water rates announced by the Homa Bay Water and Sanitation Company

They said the move has made residents unable to access clean and safe water.

Water prices have doubled since the new tariffs were implemented one month ago.

A 20-litre jerrican now sells at Sh20 from the previous Sh10.

In other places, facing water scarcity, it sells at Sh30.

Vendors say the new prices are affecting their businesses.

Amos Okello, a water vendor in Shauri Yako estate, said he paid the county government Sh35 for every cubic meter of water supplied to his kiosk.

Sometimes in May, he was notified of reviewed prices.

“We are supposed to pay Sh145 per cubic meter. But we’re now paying an extra charge of Sh100, which has affected our sales,” Okello said.

He said officials from Homawasco said the reviewed prices were approved by the county's top leadership.

“It is unfortunate that Homawasco wants us to retain our prices despite them reviewing the tariffs upwards," Okello said.

Michael Tabu said many residents are not ready to pay more for water.

Taabu, who uses a motorcycle to supply water, says his clients pay different prices depending on the distance covered.

“Some people are unaware that there are new tariffs for buying water. Most of them want to pay the amount they are used to,” he said.

Homawaso managing director Tom Nyonje said review of water tariffs seeks to ensure supply is not interrupted.

He said the revived prices are equally affordable.

“We charge Sh100 for every 6000 litres of water supplied. We did public participation before the review was effected,” Nyonje said.
