Interior PS Raymond Omollo has cautioned political leaders against exploiting the tragic death of blogger Albert Ojwang for personal or political gain.
Ojwang died in detention after being arrested in Homa Bay and transferred to Central Police Station in Nairobi, sparking protests.
Speaking
during a burial ceremony in Kombija village, Seme subcounty, Kisumu,
Omollo described the incident as unfortunate and urged leaders to allow
investigations to proceed without interference.
“It
is regrettable that some individuals are attempting to turn the death
of this young man into a tool for political mobilisation,” he said.
“This should not be used as an excuse to pursue ulterior motives.”
He
said the government is committed to ensuring justice is served, and the
suspects arrested will be taken through the legal process.
Omollo
also condemned the recent wave of destruction and vandalism targeting
businesses during protests linked to Ojwang’s death.
“We will not allow anyone to break the law under the guise of seeking justice,” he said.
“Any grievances must follow the proper constitutional channels.”
The PS urged the public to respect elected leaders and give them room to deliver on their mandates.
“It
is disheartening to see how quickly the public turns against elected
officials. Let’s judge them after five years, not before,” he said.
Omollo
said President William Ruto has already implemented a number of pledges
and will continue to do so before the next general election.
“You don’t have to wait until 2027 to see the President’s achievements. They are already visible across the country,” he said.
He
also announced that leaders from Kisumu county are scheduled to meet
the President at State House in the coming weeks to discuss regional
development.
“Other
counties in Nyanza, Siaya, Migori and Homa Bay have already met the
President. Kisumu leaders will follow soon,” Omollo said.
The PS urged residents of the Nyanza region to remain united and supportive of government efforts aimed at improving livelihoods and fostering national unity.
