Police clash with mob in Nyamira, two officers injured

Two police officers sustained injuries when they were attacked by an irate mob destroying property in the Kemera area, Manga Sub County, Nyamira County, on Tuesday.

The angry mob had gathered at the house of a suspect, who is in police custody for alleged murder, and began destroying property and torching houses. 

Police officers led by OCS Sengera Police Station-Manga David Kemboi rushed to the scene to quell the violence by the villagers at Moitunya Village, who were shouting and yelling.

Upon spotting the police officers, the mob started hurling stones at them, prompting the officers to launch tear gas.

According to police reports, the crowd grew increasingly large and overpowered the officers, who resorted to shooting into the air to disperse the mob.

Two police officers, Kenneth Njoroge, sustained bruises on his left elbow, and Rama Jumanne sustained a cut on his right thumb, shoulder, and bruises on his left hand.

No civilians were injured.

The windscreen of the Manga Police Station Land Cruiser was completely shattered, and also assorted goods and a permanent house of approximately 2.9 million belonging to the suspect were set ablaze.

Police officers in Manga sub-County have commenced investigations into the matter and called residents to maintain order as the investigative agencies establish the root of the chaos.
