Sh16m mother and child complex in Kisumu to be opened

The centre, which will benefit more than 10,000, people has been built by Mpesa foundation

The Sh16 million mother and child complex at Ratta health centre in Kisumu county will be commissioned on Friday.

The centre, which will benefit more than 10,000, people has been built by Mpesa foundation. 

It will be handed over to Kisumu government in an event that will be attended by Governor Anyang' Nyong'o and Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa.

The works at the centre include construction and select equipping of the maternal, child and neonatal complex and refurbishment of the existing labour room, delivery room and post-natal room.

The centre is set to provide a conducive environment for mothers to deliver and enable the health centre to provide better services to more women. 

It will also provide a variety of critical services such as outpatient care, maternity care, comprehensive clinic care and laboratory services.

Earlier, Nyong’o praised the project, saying it will boost health services.

"We are confident that this infrastructure development will improve health outcomes for mothers and children and also benefit residents,” he said.

On Tuesday, Health executive Gregory Ganda said the unit has been completed and is ready for commissioning.

"Today I had the pleasure of visiting the just concluded Ratta Maternal and Child Health Unit. This incredible new wing will be officially commissioned on Friday by  Governor Anyang Nyong'o," he wrote in his Facebook page.

The groundbreaking of the centre followed by the construction of a nurse station, a waiting bay with a children’s play area, two consultants’ rooms, a child welfare clinic room, a pharmacy with a store and a family planning room among others.

The investment includes purchasing of medical equipment that will see each room equipped to standard and planting of 100 tree seedlings towards environmental conservation.

During the visit, Ganda also took the opportunity to inspect the ongoing renovation works at the facility.

The renovations are part of efforts to transform the unit into a comprehensive health and wellness centre.
