Homa Bay government has completed constituting the ward climate change committees in readiness to implement the county climate resilience investments under FLLoCA.
The government through the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action Programme (FLLoCA) is supporting activities undertaken by local communities to address the adverse effects of climate change.
The FLLoCA is strengthening local resilience to the impact of climate change, natural hazards and other shocks/stressors by building local capacity to plan, budget and monitor resilience investments.
Members of ward committees are tasked with coordinating activities aimed at promoting greening and addressing the impact of climate change.
Homa Bay Director for Environment and Climate Climate Roy Odongo has already identified key areas for implementing the projects.
They include Agriculture, Water, and Environment & Forestry.
“The formation of the committees implies the county's readiness to implement the programmes. Members are tasked with undertaking activities that will support greening the environment and mitigate the impacts of climate change," Odongo said.
Speaking when he attended a committee and stakeholders meeting in Kendu Bay ward, Karachuonyo constituency on Thursday, Odongo said the committees will operate with the already established FLLOCA guidelines as they implement the programme.
The guidelines are developed to be used to accurately predict and establish environmental and social risks associated with the programme.
Homa Bay county government has received about Sh22 million to establish structures ahead of the implementation of the programmes.
The county has established the Climate Information Centre and trained people who will help in the implementation of the programme.
According to the director, they are going to undertake activities such as the distribution of drought-resistant seeds for planting and bio-fertilisers.
Sinking of boreholes and equipping with solar pump which includes rehabilitation of Sindo and Kanyaluo water schemes.
"The department in partnership with Kenya Forest Service will establish community tree nurseries in each subcounty. Residents will plant trees in wards to promote greening at the grass-root," he added.
During the meeting, residents were urged to protect the projects meant to improve their living standards and promote sustainable development.
Odongo said the project is participatory as it requires concerted efforts.
Each committee consists of male and female youth green champions and male and female youth with disability. Homa Bay has 40 wards.
“We should avoid vandalising projects meant to help our people. The project is participatory and we should join it to building the society,” he added.
