Reigning Africa 20kmwalk race bronze medallist Sylvia Kemboi will be looking to improve at next month's Africa Games in Accra, Ghana.
Following the postponement of the Africa Games Trials by Athletics Kenya, Kemboi said she will use this period to train hard and ensure she makes the team.
“With new dates announced by the federation, I want to continue training so that I can get into the team without any challenge,” said Kemboi.
The Africa Games were planned for February last weekend at the Nyayo Stadium but were moved to March 5-6 at the same venue following the sudden death of world marathon record holder Kelvin Kiptum on February 11.
Kemboi said her training has been going on smoothly at the Complete Sports Camp ahead of the games set for March 8-23.
“I have been practicing well in preparation for the national championships and Africa Games by competing in Athletics Kenya track and field weekend meetings across the country,” she noted.
With the continental championships qualifying time set at one hour and 50 minutes, Kemboi said she had made the time during the AK weekend meeting at the Ulinzi Complex in January after winning the 20km walk race in one hour 43 minutes.
“I made the qualifying mark but this is yet to be confirmed by AK. However, that will not stop me from competing at the trials. I want to stamp my authority in a big way,” added Kemboi.
She is expected to face off with Africa Games 20km walk champion Emily Ngii of the Kenya Defence Forces.
After Ghana, Kemboi will be seeking to qualify for the Olympics at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships set for April 21 in Antalya, Turkey.
The event is set to attract top world walkers in the marathon race walking mixed Relay, where the quartet will be covering 42km just like in the marathon running. The top 25 finishers in Antalya will get a direct ticket to Paris 2024.
