Police are detaining a 43-year-old man who allegedly married and stayed with a Form 1 student as his wife at Oyombe village in Ndhiwa constituency.

The suspect, who was arrested on Wednesday, had been 'married' to the 15-year-old girl for three months.

Security officers, led by Kajwang sub-location assistant chief Enos Nyawade, rescued the girl from the hands of the suspect in Miyoro village.

The man was taken to Kobodo police post before being transferred to Ndhiwa police station for interrogation.

Nyawade said the girl failed to report to school from January when schools were re-opened. The suspect is a married man with children.

“We conducted a search and rescued the girl after she went missing for three months. Information we heard is the girl failed to report to school for unknown reason,” the assistant chief said.

Their search bore fruit after some residents reported to the parents that they were seeing the girl at the home of the suspect.

The minor had been kept indoors and out of public for three months.

Nyawade said they raided the suspect’s house and found him with the minor before they arrested both of them.

“We handed them to police officers in Ndhiwa for more investigations. Let adult people avoid taking advantage of the minors because they are weak,” he said.

Officer in charge of Ndhiwa police station Evans Mosota said they are detaining the man for questioning over the matter.

Mosota said the suspect is also having an active defilement case in the area. The officer has urged minors to focus on education.

“The girl would be taken for medical examination before she is released. The suspect has another case of defilement and we will arraign him over a similar offence,” the police officer said.
