More than 200 youths from various learning institutions in Kisumu county have been urged to maintain and promote peace before and after election.

The youth leadership dialogue was organised by three groups: Champions of Peace, YWCA and Mercy Corps.

The youths were from University of Nairobi, Maseno University, KCA and Kisumu Polytechnic, amongst others.

Champions of Peace communication officer Duncan Erick said in the recent past they have witnessed scenarios where youths have been used wrongfully by politicians to instigate political violence.

Erick said the three organisation came together to bring the youths together to debate on matters of peace, election preparedness and election itself.

He further said youths have been also been isolated when it comes to matters of leadership and election.

The officer added that they have also witnessed cases of political violence that are being practiced by political class using the youths during night hours.

"We want to bring the youths together to ensure that we educate them on this matters and how it's important for them not to allow themselves used by politicians during this period," Erick said.

YWCA manager Valerie Oyando said they discussed matters of peace and how to ensure young people vote wisely.

She said a number of young people, especially those in the universities, were going to vote for the first time, with still not fully aware on the importance of voting.

"If we involve them in this dialogue process, we can have them commit to maintain peace during the election," Oyando said.

She said the youths will be signing a peace pledge with them not to be involved in electoral violence.

Communical Centre for Justice and Peace county coordinator Cardinal Elias Komenya said the young people can play a key role in electoral process and peace building.

"It's important for them to know how they can promote peace amongst themselves and within the entire community," Komenya said.
