Nyanza regional police commander Karanja Muiruri has ordered a complete reorganization of the traffic department to improve service delivery.

The looming shake up will see all officers who are currently attached to the traffic department but haven't attended traffic courses taken back to general police duties.

According to the latest directive, police drivers attached to the traffic department in the six counties and non commissioned officers will be redeployed back to the respective police stations immediately.

The action comes days after IG of police Hillary Mutyambai held a meeting in Nairobi with regional police commanders where he decried corruption in the traffic department.

Muiruri notes in the communication to the county commanders that the skewed deployment was at the detriment of understaffing in some police stations.

He said traffic in most commands is comparatively low apart from Kisumu and Kisii counties.

"The number of personnel performing traffic duties should always justify the needs of traffic management," he said.

“This therefore necessitates re-deployment of excess police officers performing traffic duties for them to be utilized in other police duties.”

The police boss said the redeployment will ensure administrative, operational and command functions in police Stations is done in a more responsive manner.

"County Police Commander should audit and prepare a list of trained and untrained officers attached to traffic duties in all your commands," he said.

He further directed the county police commanders to ensure officers adhere to codes of conduct.

A week ago, Muiruri reversed transfers of 74 police officers in the ranks of senior sergeants and police constables.
