Northeastern residents urged to think outside the box to thrive in business

Residents of Northeastern have been urged to explore business opportunities that have better returns.

Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Eric Ruto said there are so many untapped opportunities that could transform the region and the country at large.

He said since livestock farming is the backbone of the region's economy, residents should utilise hides and skins to provide employment.

“Because of the number of camels we have in this region, we can export camel milk to places as far as China and this will in turn grow our GDP,” he said.

“The global demand for livestock products is an opportunity we need to tap into, we are still looking for opportunities to link both the local livestock and crop farmers to international market.” 

Ruto spoke in Garissa during the launch of the KNCCI strategic plan 2024-28.

Ambassador Abdul Salam Al-Awadi said Yemen is ready to partner with Kenya on business opportunities in the livestock sector.

Garissa KNCCI chairman Mohamed Salat said, “The strategic plan represents more than just a document, it is a blueprint for action, a roadmap to a future where Garissa thrives economically, socially and culturally. It embodies our shared vision of a vibrant economy, resilient communities and improved livelihoods for all residents.”

He said with the largest livestock market in subSaharan Africa, Garissa county holds a significant advantage in the livestock industry.

Salat said there are ample opportunities for investment in modernising infrastructure, enhancing veterinary services and establishing value-addition

“As we embark on the transformative journey, it is imperative that we  remain steadfast in our commitment to realising the goals outlined in the strategic plan," he said.

"We must leverage the collective strengths of our diverse stakeholders  including government agencies, development partners, the business community and civil society to drive implementation and achieve tangible results.”

Salat said Tana River presents immense opportunities for agricultural development.

He said its water can be harnessed for irrigation, enabling the cultivation of a diverse range of crops such as fruits, vegetables and cereals.

Investment in modern irrigation systems and agricultural practices can significantly boost productivity and enhance food security, Salat said.

Other areas, he said, are gypsum mining and rice production. He said Jarajara is known for production of high quality rice.

Garissa Township MP Dekow Mohamed said there is need for mindset change and tapping into the manufacturing and value addition sector.

“I want to urge the Garissa chamber of commerce to implement the strategic plan for future betterment of the local business community,” he said.
