All stadiums in Kenya will be audited to identify those that are substandard and pinpoint thieves of public money.
Youth Affairs, Sports and Arts CS Ababu Namwamba said Embu Moi Stadium should accommodate sports fans comfortably, considering the funds used for its construction.
The audits will be completed in 60 days, he said.
He spoke during an inspection of the stadium in preparation for Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1.
The CS said those found guilty of misusing government funds for stadiums will be held accountable.
He said Embu Moi Stadium is in a deplorable condition and condemned the previous government for spending millions of shillings to come up with such substandard structures.
"It's a pity to have our teams play in such fields and those who are responsible for building such stadia with over Sh180 million," said Namwamba.
The Embu Moi Stadium has been a matter of concern over the years due to poor facilities.
It suffers poor drainage, poor playing surface and incomplete changing rooms, making it unfit for purpose of hosting national events.
In February 2020, the stadium was temporarily closed to allow a drainage upgrade since it flooded during rainy seasons making it unusable, and trimming of the overgrown grass and landscaping.
The upgrade didn't seem to cure the problem as the stadium still floods during rains and is dusty during other seasons.
CS Namwamba said he will initiate the stadium's renovation and upgrade in the next three months to ensure it's in perfect state.
"There are some areas of this stadium we can easily renovate and we will ensure that is done," he said.
He pointed out the playing surface, washrooms and drainage system as the priorities that will be improved within the next three months.
This will be done alongside Njukiri stadium, which is set to host this year's Madaraka Day celebrations. Njukiri is located about five kilometers West of Embu town.
The government intends to construct a sports complex in Njukiri which, aside hosting Madaraka Day celebrations, will serve various sports disciplines.
Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire praised the CS for the visit and affirmed the move to construct a sports complex in Njukiri area.
She said the construction by Sports Kenya will kick off in February and be completed before Madaraka Day.
"We are happy to have Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba who came in an inspection mission. We are looking forward to the ministry starting the construction in February since we only have three months to spare from then," Mbarire said.
She pledged to promote sports development within the county in partnership with Youth Affairs, Sports and Arts ministry headed by Namwamba.
