Ahmed Mukhtar was on Tuesday afternoon sworn-in as Wajir governor.

Mukhtar, 39, assumes office following the impeachment of former Governor Mohamed Abdi on Monday.

Speaking at the county headquarters moments after taking the oath of office that was conducted by High Court judge Said Chitembwe, Mukhtar promised to prioritise key sectors of  health, education and water that he said were ailing.

“As I assume office today, I am fully aware of the full responsibility that has been bestowed upon me. The people of Wajir are craving for efficiency and  good governance. I will strive to do my best in that regard,” said Mukhtar.

Recently health workers went on  strike, accusing the county of doing little to address their concerns, among them promotions and poor health working conditions.

The governor promised to meet the union officials and address their concerns.

He appealed to the residents and leaders to unite and build a new Wajir that he said will accommodate each and every person.

“I will personally desist elements of hate, nepotism and skewed resource allocation. The people of Wajir are the same and so they deserve to be treated equally,” said Mukhtar.

He said he will soon be meeting all local leaders in a bid to strategize on the best way to lead and deliver to the people of Wajir.

On Monday, the Senate Committee recommended the impeachment of Wajir Governor Mohammed Abdi.

In the subsequent voting, 25 senatorS voted to impeach him while two defended him.

Four abstained.

In his earlier defence before the House, the county chief appealed to senators to carefully study the charge that had been sustained by the committee that investigated his ouster, and give him another chance.

Abdi said the offence does not amount to gross violation of the Constitution and proceeded to list the achievements his administration had made in the health sector.
