The National Construction Authority (NCA) has suspended all works at a proposed residential development along Peponi Road in Westlands, Nairobi, following safety concerns at the site.
In a statement issued Wednesday, December 17, 2025, the Authority said it received a report of the incident on Monday, December 15, 2025, involving a project located in the area.
The project was registered by the NCA on September 27, 2024, under registration number 53127415710979.
Acting under Sections 5 and 23 of the National Construction Authority Act, 2011, the agency dispatched a quality assurance team to carry out a compliance inspection.
Preliminary assessments indicated potential structural issues at the development, which is under construction and designed to comprise three basement levels and 13 suspended floors.
“Upon confirmation of the issue, all construction works were immediately suspended and the site cordoned off to safeguard the public,” the Authority said.
The area surrounding the site has been secured by the National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU) in collaboration with the National Police Service.
As a precaution, occupants of neighbouring properties have been advised to temporarily vacate the area pending further technical assessments.
To establish the extent of the situation and determine the next steps, the NCA has constituted a Multi-Sectoral Agencies Coordinating Committee (MSACC) to conduct a detailed technical evaluation of the building’s structural integrity.
The committee brings together representatives from the NCA, Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), Board of Registration of Architects and Quantity Surveyors (BORAQS), National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), Nairobi City County Government, National Youth Service (NYS), National Disaster Management Unit (NDMU), National Buildings Inspectorate (NBI), and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO).
NCA Executive Director Maurice Akech said public safety remains the Authority’s top priority.
“No further construction activities will be permitted on the site until the ongoing investigations are concluded and appropriate recommendations implemented,” he said.
The Authority has urged members of the public to keep away from the affected area and to rely only on official communication from the NCA and other relevant government agencies. Further updates will be issued as investigations progress.
The National Construction Authority (NCA) is mandated to oversee, regulate and coordinate the development of Kenya’s construction industry, with a focus on safety, quality and compliance with approved standards.
Established under the National Construction Authority Act, the agency enforces the national Building Code and ensures that construction works across the country meet prescribed technical and safety requirements. It registers and regulates contractors, accredits skilled construction workers and certifies site supervisors to promote professionalism within the sector.
The Authority is also responsible for registering construction projects and issuing compliance certificates, a process aimed at enhancing accountability and traceability in the industry. To safeguard public safety, the NCA conducts mandatory site inspections to monitor quality control and adherence to approved designs.
Beyond regulation, the NCA plays a key role in industry development by building technical capacity, supporting research on new construction technologies and promoting best practices. Its work is aligned with national development priorities, including Vision 2030 and housing and infrastructure growth agendas, to support sustainable economic development.
