Kibera’s largest open Market, Toi could soon be renamed to Raila Odinga Market.

Nairobi County Assembly Majority leader Peter Imwatok on Thursday said he will soon move a motion to have the market named after his party leader.

According to the legislator, the renaming of Toi after the former Prime Minister will limit arson cases since the arsonists will be afraid of committing the heinous act out of respect for Raila.

“We passed the motion of renaming the roads and other institutions. We are proposing to bring a motion to rename the Toi market to Raila Odinga. This will happen in a few weeks to come and it will be to safeguard the legacy of the market through a legend who is our party leader,” Imwatok explained.

On Wednesday, the MCAs passed a motion that will compel the executive to construct a perimeter wall at Toi market in the financial year 2023-24.

The motion comes timely after an arson incident at the market a few weeks ago.

Imwatok stated that there should be a collaboration with the administrative authorities, community leaders, and stakeholders to ensure that the rebuilding of the market after the recent arson meets the specific needs of the traders.

City Hall developed a policy for naming and renaming streets and roads in the capital.

Nairobi has no policy on naming streets, roads or buildings.

The city lacks a framework for harmoniously addressing property and street names, especially because e-commerce deliveries require street names.

The Nairobi City County Property Addressing and Street Naming Policy (Pasnap) aims for a transparent and predictable procedure for naming and renaming.

It aims to improve the ease of doing business and movement, particularly e-commerce growth and development. Pasnap will create a culture of identifying streets and buildings.

Some roads and streets, including those in new estates and subdivisions, are unnamed.
