After 55 days in office, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja on Wednesday officially opened the third County Assembly of Nairobi.

Sakaja laid out his vision for the county in his maiden address of the House vowing to work with MCAs to restore sanity in Nairobi.

He pledged to set up a liaison office that will structure engagement between the Executive and the Assembly.

“Through this organ, all requests from honourable members will be received, processed and channeled to relevant officers with solutions provided to address the issues," he said.

The governor vowed to put the Ward Based Development Projects as a priority which aims to devolve projects to the ward level is an important plank of our plan.

"This program is going to be better managed going forward. Funds appropriated for the wards will be paid on time, and wards will receive what is rightfully theirs," Sakaja added.

As a sigh of relief, the county boss announced that going forward, bursary cheques for the Executive and the Assembly will be issued at the beginning of every term.

"This noble endeavour will continue under my administration and as we increase our revenues in the coming financial years, we shall also review the amounts allocated to each ward," Sakaja said.

The governor also stated that his administration will be pushing aggressive steps to fix Nairobi’s waste management challenges.

He called on the assembly to partner with his administration to ensure a clean and green environment.

"I'm of the firm belief that if we don’t do something now regarding the state of Nairobi, the city will slide into lawlessness that will be difficult to salvage," he said.

In the last month, City Hall has managed to collect 80,000 tonnes of garbage in an ongoing initiative.

Sakaja said his administration is working on curbing illegal dumping across the city and new collection points will be gazetted soon.

While commenting on the recurrent Gikomba marker fires, Sakaja said that a fire station will be constructed at the site and boreholes drilled to ensure services are accessible throughout the market.

He also vowed to acquire a title deed for the market and highlighted that his office has began the process of surveying the land.

To decongest city markets, City Hall will construct 20 markets across the 85 subcounties to provide spaces for trade for our citizens.

"Already we have made progress in the finished markets that were yet to be commissioned due to several bottlenecks that we have unlocked,” Sakaja said.

The governor together with President William Ruto will be commissioning the New Wakulima Market along Kangundo road followed by Mwariro and Karandini markets at the end of the month.

He announced that his administration has resolved disputes that led to the “suspension” of opening of Dandora stadium.

The contractor is expected back on site.

"Other stadia that will follow include Kihumbuini in Kangemi, Woodely in Kibra, Umeme in Ziwani and the City Stadium,” Sakaja added.

Before the sitting, Sakaja conducted a guard of honour along City Hallway where officers from the Inspectorate Department lined up.

Azimio la Umoja Coalition, the majority side in the assembly, sat on the right side of the Speaker while Kenya Kwanza sat on the left.

The governor being the highest authority took over the Speaker's seat.

Speaker Ken Ng’ondi sat on the right side of Sakaja while Senator Edwin Sifuna took the left.

Nairobi's first Woman Representative Rachel Shebesh was among the guests present at the sitting.

Outgoing CEC members, former MCAs, Nairobi MCAs, Embakasi Central MP Benjamin Gathiru and his counterpart from Embakasi West Mark Mwenje were also present.

Sakaja recognised the four female MCAs who were elected in office.

"I respect the women who fought with men and beat them. They are our stars, and we are proud of them," he said.
