Johnson Sakaja will on Thursday be sworn in as the next Nairobi governor after he won the August 9 elections.

The committee on the assumption of the office of the governor has said the ceremony will be conducted between 10 am and 2 pm at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre.

The event will coincide with similar events across the counties where new governors will also be taking oaths of office.

Chief Justice Martha Koome has already appointed judges who will preside over the swearing-in ceremonies.

However, there won't be such ceremonies in Mombasa and Kakamega counties after the governor elections were suspended.

In Nairobi, the ceremony will be presided over by Justices Roselyne Aburili and assisted by magistrate Caroline Kabucho

By law, all newly elected governors are supposed to be sworn in 10 days after being declared winners by the IEBC.

The swearing-in is supposed to take place on the first Thursday after the lapse of the 10 days.

“The Governor-elect shall, during the swearing-in ceremony, take and subscribe to the oath or affirmation of office as prescribed in the First Schedule section of the Assumption of the Office of Governor Act 2019,” states the law reads.

Outgoing Governor Anne Kananu has said she is ready to hand over to her successor.

“I will hand over Nairobi county to Johnson Sakaja the Governor-elect when he’s sworn in. My team and his team are working to ensure there’s a smooth transition of power,” she said.

Sakaja won the governor's seat after garnering 699,392 votes.

Together with his Deputy Njoroge Muchiri, they said they were ready to lead the county to greatness immediately after they assume office.

"Expect a new Nairobi of hope, order and dignity. You are in safe hands with me and my deputy Njoroge Muchiri,” Sakaja said.

In his manifesto, Sakaja pledged to construct 20 new markets across Nairobi to promote traders and decongest Gikomba and Wakulima, to provide an easy environment for doing business.

To create an enabling business environment, Sakaja has promised to initiate a Sh50 million biashara fund per year for each of the 85 wards to facilitate small businesses

He is also banking to introduce a city metro commuter light rail, a safe and reliable infrastructure for non-vehicular transport.

Sakaja said he will leverage an infrastructure bond to fund such development.
