Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka should shelve his presidential ambitions and back another aspirant from the region.

American-based scholar Jeff Kaluyu on Saturday said he is the best candidate to deliver the presidency for the Kamba community in next year's general election.

As such, he wants Kalonzo to shelve his presidential ambitions so he becomes the community's sole presidential candidate.

“Kalonzo and I belong to the same team – the Kamba tribe. In football, when a player becomes exhausted and is unable to score, he is substituted. It is now my turn as the reserve player to enter the field and score,” Kaluyu said.

He is planning to run on the Unified Change Party ticket.

Kaluyu spoke at Kikumini Comprehensive School in Mulango Ward, in Kitui Central, during the funeral service of retired teacher Boniface Kitheka.

The late Kitheka was the father of Kitui-based radio journalist Mercy Mueni, who works for Mabitu and Syukimau radio stations.

“I have been on the bench for a long time. My time has come because previous attempts by Kamba leaders to clinch the presidency have not succeeded,” Kaluyu said.

The US-based scholar said he has the academic credentials necessary to challenge President William Ruto at the ballot and potentially defeat him.

“Some people have argued that anyone without a PhD is unqualified for the presidency. In 2027, it will be PhD versus PhD. The President will face an equal match, and there will be no claims that his challenger is academically inferior,” Kaluyu said.

Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu asked residents to vote out leaders whom they believe have failed to deliver on their promises.

“If the vote you cast for any leader has not benefited you or yielded meaningful results, do not sympathise with them. Send them home without mercy,” Mulu said.
