The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reported a slight drop in the total number of road traffic deaths in 2023 (4,324) compared to 2022 (4,432).
However, the World Health Organization estimates Kenya’s road traffic crash fatality rate at 28 per 100,000 population translating to an annual road death toll of 14,926 (WHO, 2023) indicating that many incidents are going unreported.
In Kenya and an increasing number of countries in sub-Saharan Africa, the rise in road traffic deaths is exacerbated by the growing use of motorcycle taxis, known locally as bodabodas, as a form of informal public transport.
