Two people who were painting a building under construction died on the spot after falling off a fifth of the building at the Makutano area in Meru.
Police say the tragic fall occurred after the crane they were using malfunctioned leading to the fatal fall.
The two Felix Omondi, 30, and Zoka Muthui 35-years-old, fell on the concrete ground and died on the spot while one of their colleague who was in the same crane cheated death by hanging on the building’s window though he sustained some bruises.
Imenti North subcounty police commander Ezekiel Chepkwony who confirmed the accident said police have started investigations to unravel the mysterious occurrence that has left many in shock.
Chepkwony said investigations will be done to establish if construction safety regulations were followed before pointing blame to either workers or the owner.
“We will know if there is any party who flouted regulations, and lawful action will be taken if any is found culpable," he said.
He appealed to the National Construction Authority to ensure safety measures at construction sites were effected to avoid potential accidents.
“The workers were painting the building while on the crane when it malfunctioned and they fell off," Chepkwony said.
"Two died on the spot while the third one survived. It is an unfortunate incident. My appeal to those who are doing construction is to be very careful and take workers’ safety very seriously to avoid such an incident which has occurred today."
Ahmed Awino, the lead site painting contractor regretted to have lost his friends just one day after they had started working after arriving in Meru on Saturday.
“I am saddened by the painful death of my friends. The two who died had just finished painting a section of the upper floor. They waited for their colleague to finish for them to go to the next floor below, but the crane suddenly broke up throwing them to the ground,’’ Awino said.
Martin Marete urged the county and national governments to frequently check construction sites because they would not have allowed the three to work without the required.
Eyewitness John Mwiti, a local at the scene, said it was regrettable that two people died because the safety measures were allegedly not in effect at the site.
The bodies of the two were taken to Meru Referral Hospital Morgue.
