Interior CS Kithure Kindiki has announced that Central Imenti will be split into two to create more subcounties in Meru.
Speaking in Meru on Sunday, Kindiki said he had heard the request of the leaders to create more administrative centres within the county.
"I will be coming back here to Meru in a few weeks where we will split Central Imenti into two," he said.
The CS however said that the request must also be approved by the residents before any official order is issued.
A section of Meru leaders have been pushing for the creation of more subcounties in the county.
Last year in January, Imenti South MP Kathuri Murungi started to collect signatures for the creation of new subcounties within the constituency.
The lawmaker has blamed the governor for failure to create more subcounties.
Kathuri collected signatures and petitioned former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i to gazette Igoki and Mitunguu/Nkuene as subcounties.
Kathuri said in 2017, during a public participation forum, residents proposed the creation of three subcounties.
The subcounties however, remain a pipe dream.
The legislator said his people have lost about 500 job opportunities that would favour residents if a new subcounty was created.
"I will fight for it. Those who thought it was over, it is not yet. We are disadvantaged. We are now going to play it rough for our people to benefit. If I will go home because of it, I will be a satisfied man," Kathuri said.
