Meru county alcoholics and drinks control board CEO Mbaabu Muguna has said they have closed 130 bars in efforts to minimize alcohol consumption.

He said the 130 bars closed did not meet the requirement.

He said the number of bars was 4000 in the last two years but they have closed bars that do not meet requirements.

“We now have 2200 bars South Imenti constituency is leading with the number of bars followed by North Imenti constituency, we prefer an area to lead with bars and have low consumption of illicit brews,” Muguna said.

 

“We will look at cleanses of bars and restaurants selling liquor, we will also look at their size and what type of alcohol they are selling and how they are selling it,” Muguna said.

He said some bars have close proximity to schools and therefore they will be closed.

“We have found out some bars selling illicit brews in our routine raids we found a dead snake in the illicit brew that was being sold to residents,” Muguna said.

Muguna said those who take alcohol should ensure they consume alcohol that is licensed and permitted by the government.

“If there is a bottle that is permitted and has KEBS seal it should have the expiry date because alcohol is one of the vices that has made Meru to lack behind in terms of development,” Muguna said.

He said five rehabilitation centers that area available in Meru are all filled by drug and alcohol addicts.

“If you have someone who is addicted and you go to seek admission in this rehabilitation centers, we have found out you will be told to wait two to three months before he is admitted because they are full to capacity,” Muguna said.

 

He spoke in after launching of a roadshow truck mounted with speakers and motorcade that will traverse to all town and shopping centers in the campaign dubbed Kaa Sober.

Muguna said Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza has mooted funds and availed 12 acres to build rehabilitation centers across the country.

“Our staff have been taught by Nacada on the effects of alcohol and how to spot contraband and fake alcohol,”

Muguna told residents that drinking does not relieve stress but carry forward the problem and escalate it.
