Several lobby groups in Mombasa have rallied to the defence
of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Captain William Ruto,
dismissing what they term as a smear campaign aimed at derailing his leadership
and blocking the renewal of his term.
The Cardinal Youth Association, Kaya Elders from the coastal
region, the Pwani Disability Network, and several small and medium enterprises
(SMEs) have vowed to stand with the MD.
They have accused a section of disgruntled port officials of
orchestrating false allegations to force him out.
Capital Youth Caucas Secretary General Evans Momany said
Ruto’s tenure has been marked by sweeping reforms, including streamlining
tender processes, ending backroom deals, and restoring integrity to port
operations
"These changes have angered contractors who previously
thrived under opaque procurement systems," said Momanyi.
The alleged 'cartels' are also accused of bankrolling some activists
seeking his removal.
The pro-Ruto coalition said the attacks threaten good
governance and service delivery at one of the country’s most critical state
corporations.
“The progress seen at KPA under his leadership should be
safeguarded, not sabotaged for selfish interests,” said Momanyi.
On Tuesday, Capital Youth Caucas, Kaya Elders and the SMEs will hold a press conference in defence of Ruto at Moi Avenue, Mombasa
