In Summary
Mombasa residents have called for more efforts to contain the spread of cholera despite assurances from the government of increased efforts.
Athman Sudi, a community health promoter, said at least four people have died from the cholera outbreak and more deaths could happen if nothing is done.
A spot check on the Bamburi-Kisauni route shows at least six illegal garbage dumping sites along the road.
“We have already seen four deaths. How many more will we witness? The national government said it is working to prevent further spread, but what is the county government doing?” Sudi asked.
He said with the rains in Mombasa and poor drainage, mini-swamps are being created, following the delay in picking garbage.
“Today, if you move from Bamburi Mwisho to Lights, you will have to deal with the foul smell because of the uncollected garbage on the roadsides. That is a catalyst for the spread of cholera,” Sudi said.
But the county department of environment and governance said they are dedicated to clearing and collecting waste along the streets.
“We try to restore cleanliness and dignity to our beloved community as efficiently as possible. Our teams have been trimming overgrown bushes and clearing vegetation to boost cleanliness and improve public safety," the department said on its socials.
“These regular efforts are key to preventing illegal dumping, creating a safer environment and maintaining the beauty of our city. We're dedicated to keeping all public spaces clean and well cared for."
The county asked residents to also play a role in cleaning, saying cleanliness needs concerted efforts.
“Let’s nurture our surroundings and take pride in a cleaner, healthier Mombasa,” the department said.
This comes a day after Health CS Aden Duale assured the country of safety from the cholera that started in February.
Duale on Wednesday said the government has stepped up efforts to prevent further deaths even as more counties record cases.
So far, at least seven counties have reported cholera cases, including Nairobi, Homa Bay, Mombasa, Kwale and Turkana.
“We have put all resources and contingencies in place. I’m sure our teams at the surveillance level and at the public health state department have put everything in motion,” Duale said.
Health director general Patrick Amoth said Kisumu and Migori counties are also grappling with cases of cholera.
He said infection prevention controls have been activated.
“We have supplied the counties with necessary resources to be able to ensure that we bring this outbreak to a quick control,” Amoth said.
