Base Titanium has established counselling centres in and outside the mining site to offer services to more than 1,700 workers as the company closes down.

The counselling centres are intended to assist employees in dealing with mental health issues and psychologically prepare them for the closure of the business.

The mining company is expected to end its operations in December, following the exhaustion of mineral resources.

However, most workers will be laid off in early November as part of the closing process.

Base compliance and administration superintendent Clapperton Ngome said a majority of the employees have been stressed because they are about to lose their jobs.

"The company has a closing plan and we have set up counselling desks in Kwale, Mombasa and Nairobi to try to manage the stress of our employees," he said.

Ngome said many employees have panicked not knowing their fate after the mineral firm closes.

He said it is for this reason the company sought counselling services to assist the workers in transitioning and effectively coping with the new reality.

Ngome said the exercise has proven successful as some of the employees have left for greener pastures, while others are optimistic about finding new jobs.

"The counselling programme has really helped because some of the employees are being released as they take on new roles in other companies," he said.

Base Titanium's government and community relations superintendent Ali Masemo said some employees have been absorbed by international mining firms because of their skills.

He said the mining company has entered a critical phase in terms of production and export of minerals.

Base company specialises in mineral sands (zircon, rutile and ilmenite) products that are used in paint pigment, refractory equipment and production of titanium.

In 2023, the company shifted to the last mining bloc in Mafisini and Bumamani, following a special mining lease extension.

Masemo said the company's mining operations have been declining due to mineral depletion, necessitating cost-cutting measures.

He said after the closure, about 200 workers will be retained for a while to oversee the restoration and rehabilitation process and other crucial activities.

Some of the rehabilitation works include backfilling of mining pits, tree and grass planting and agricultural trials for post-mining land use.

The trials for post-mining land use are intended to provide valuable insights into the potential of mined soil for the government to consider after mineral deposits have been exhausted.

To ensure high-quality results, the company tested various land preparation techniques, bank stabilisation methods, green manure for soil improvement and a variety of pioneer plant species.

By last year, the company had rehabilitated about 71 per cent of the mined-out areas.

Masemo and Ngome spoke during the handing over ceremony to a new media relations and coordinator officer at the Leopard Beach Hotel in Kwale county.

The docket was given to the current awareness officer Abdulkarim Kuchengwa.

Kuchengwa took over from the outgoing media relations officer Stanley Mwahanga.
