Vihiga Queens coach Boniface Nyamunyamu is confident of defending the Women's Premier League title despite Saturday's 1-0 loss to Police Bullets.
Linda Okoth's first-half penalty strike at Police Sacco Stadium saw Bullets go top of the table with 31 points, three better than Vihiga.
One loss is not enough to derail their dream of a record-extending fifth title.
“Anything can happen in football. The league is not yet done. We are still confident in retaining our title. Remember we won the league last year on the final matchday,” said Nyamunyamu.
Queens dubbed ‘Legacy Makers’ clinched last season’s title with 51 points, beating Gaspo Women 2-1 in the final league match through Janet Moraa's brace.
“The game was tough. Bullets are a worthy opponent but we are still in the title race. In games like this, you have to take the chances created. We did not,” he stated.
Focus shifts to upcoming matches as they seek redemption.
“Despite the loss, I am proud of the determination of my team. They did their best. We need to work hard to get maximum points in subsequent matches,” stated Nyamunyamu.
He added that the loss of key players will not be an excuse. Vihiga saw captain Mercyline Wayodi leave for Kampala Queens in Uganda, alongside Anita Namata.
Moraa signed for Yanga Princess in Tanzania while Winnie Babirye joined Makerere in Uganda.
“We lost some important players. They left a big gap but I am confident that, with time, we will be able to fill the void. We have brought in new young players, most of whom are from schools,” he said.
“I will not put pressure on the young recruits. I want to get the best from them but if I pressure them, they will not give us the results we want.”
