Kisumu RFC players celebrate after their second place finish

Kisumu RFC coach Lawrence Buyachi is happy with the current state of affairs at the club even as they target to climb up the National Sevens Series standings.

are performing quite well both on and off the field.

“These are good times for the club," said Buyachi. "We have gone through a lot in the past, including missing the first three legs of last season’s National Sevens Circuit."

“The main reason for our recent successes is the commitment shown by everyone, from the board providing the funds to the players playing their hearts out,” he added.

The lake-side club is currently joint 10th on the National Sevens Circuit standings with 17 points, alongside Nakuru, in contrast to last season’s 18th-place finish with just four points.

“Not to get ahead of ourselves but we hope to get to a Main Cup semi-final or at least replicate our performance in Mombasa at the Prinsloo Sevens (August 5-6),” said the former Simbas back-row.

Kisumu recently upset last year’s Dala Sevens champions, Homeboyz, 17-0 to proceed to the Driftwood Sevens main cup quarterfinals.

"There is definitely more to come from the team even as we hope for continuous support from our fans," said Buyachi.

Buyachi further stated that they will be aiming for a top-ten finish in the National Sevens Circuit as well as in the Kenya Cup.

“Being a small community club, we have to live with the reality of losing some of our best players to bigger clubs," said Buyachi.

"The boys often get opportunities to either study or work when they move to bigger clubs, especially the Nairobi-based sides, and we cannot do anything apart from being happy for them.”

The club has in the past produced some of the biggest rugby talents in the country including the KCB trio of Andrew Amonde, Jacob Ojee and Martin Owilla as well as French side Stade Francais women’s coach, Teddy Omondi.
